British Sign Language in Christian Settings

Signs of God aims to:

  • advance the use of British Sign Language in Christian settings and to
  • promote and enable full participation in the Christian faith of people who use British Sign Language

Signs of God is a registered charity operating in England and Wales.

We also aim to encourage 'apprenticing' - encouraging tutors and interpreting team members to work closely with others more experienced than themselves, to learn and improve skills. Details of the way we aim to work can be found in our Working Practices document, on the Resources page.

Who are we?

Signs of God began in 1997 with a single workshop to discuss sign language in church settings and has grown immensely since then.  We became a registered charity and held our first AGM in 2005.  We have over 1300 people on our mailing list and have contributed to the training of many people in improving their sign language for use in Christian settings.  We have become the leading organisation for advising Christian conferences on sign language interpreter provision, and have put together teams for many of those conferences.  Signs of God is the main point of contact in the UK for advice and support on the use of interpreters in Christian settings. And we do all this with only volunteers!

More information about our development can be found in an article written for our 10th Anniversary in 2007.
